Tuesday April 17, 2018

Majors Division:  Hartnell Giants vs. Hartnell A's @ 5:30 p.m. @ Doglione Field

Final:  Hartnell Giants  0  Hartnell A's 10  F/4

DIEGO VILLAREAL HITS 2-RUN INSIDE-THE-PARK HOME RUN IN 5-RUN 1ST INNING AS SWINGING A'S TRIGGER MERCY RULE IN 10 - 0 VICTORY.

The Hartnell A's hosted the Hartnell Giants this evening in an intra-league contest at Elliott A. Doglione Memorial Field.  The A's were hungry to compete after falling to National's Navy team on April 10th.  In this game, the Swinging A's were back to their championship form and they roared out of the dugout in the 1st inning, hammering the ball all over the field and pouncing on the fastballs hurled by Giants starter Isaak Porter in an impressive 5-run 1st inning.  Aidan Esparza led off the bottom of the 1st inning, drawing a base on balls to start the rally.  Esparza advanced on a fielder's choice by Pablo Reyes.  Hartnell standout Noe Mendez knocked in Esparza with an RBI double to put the A's on the board.  Diego Villareal followed Mendez by smashing a shot deep into the outfield that allowed him to race around the bases for a 2-run inside-the-park home run to stake the A's to an immediate 3-run lead.  Angel Barajas and Joshua Yonemitsu got on board with walks and both managed to score by advancing around the bases on a combination of wild pitches or passed balls to complete the 1st inning 5-run rally.  The A's scored 3 additional runs in the 3rd inning, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Nicholas Trujillo.  Trujillo hammered the first pitch he saw from Finley Griffin and drove the ball deep to left-center field, beyond the reach of the Giants' outfielders to drive in Nathan Garcia.  In the 4th and final inning, the A's managed to capitalize on the inconsistency of Giants' reliever Jack Uchida-Dohrmann as a parade of A's base runners managed to get on board by drawing bases on balls until two A's runners were forced to score after Uchida-Dohrmann issued additional walks, triggering the 10-run mercy rule.

Noe Mendez silenced the Giants with his pinpoint command.  Mendez pitched 4 innings, struck out 3 hitters, gave up two hits and did not yield a single run in his outstanding shutout performance.  Gianni Combs-Garibaldi collected a 1st inning single off Mendez and Ryan Gutierrez hit the only extra base for the Giants, a 1st inning double.  The Giants failed to get a hit in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings.

Offensively for the A's, Noe Mendez and Nathan Garcia led the charge for the A's as both players collected 2 hits apiece, a single and a double respectively.
